“…Excellent Development is a UK charity passionate about sand dams. Sand dams are the lowest cost form of rainwater harvesting and are an ecological miracle. These small-scale dams built in seasonal river channels vastly transform dry environments into places where animals, plants and people can thrive by keeping water where communities need it long after the seasonal rains have gone! Each sand dam can provide clean water for up to 1,200 people, with minimal maintenance will last for at least 50 years. The equivalent of just £10 can therefore provide clean water for 1 person for life.

Excellent’s vision is to ensure that by 2020, 3 million more people per year living in drylands worldwide can gain access to clean water through the building of 2,500 sand dams every year. Following the proven success of their approach in Kenya, Excellent has already developed pilot projects in Sudan and Mozambique to ensure people living in dryland regions of other African countries can also experience the benefits of sand dams.

Vulcan Engineering is really pleased to have the opportunity to not only help a community in Kenya by funding one of these amazing structures but also to have the opportunity for a team of our people to help build it. We look forward to them coming back to tell us all about it…” by Alexander Oatham, Fundraising Development Manager, Excellent Development

We will be travelling to Nairobi on 6th June returning on 15th June, where we will be helping support a local village build a Sand Dam. Sand dams are shown to be the lowest cost form of rainwater harvesting, and during the intense rainy season, the dam fills up with rain water and sediment; the silt flows over the dam while the sand sinks.

After 1 to 4 rainy seasons, the riverbed upstream is filled up with sand: 25 to 40% of the volume of the sand held is actually water. Filtered by the sand, the water is clean and the dam refills naturally every rainy season. Thus giving the locals, clean healthy water, and also reducing the travel time to 30 – 60 minutes a day, instead of travelling up to 12 hours a day in drought periods. The sand dams themselves, cost around £10,000 to build, however, this provides water for life for up to 1,200 people living in the rural communities.

We at Vulcan Engineering are striving to be able to cover the cost of not just 1 dam, but 3 dams, over a three year period. And with your help, this is something that we can do.

Vulcan are covering the costs of the 10 peoples: travel, accommodation (within the local village), vaccinations, kit and time away from the business.

We have committed to Excellent Development to raise £10,000 minimum, to solely fund the sand dams – we need £10,000 per dam, we would love to build 3 dams in total, therefore, the more we raise the more dams can be built, providing life saving and a life long water source to villages who are routinely subjected to drought and famine.

Excellent Development work in partnership with the local communities to ensure the community is committed to the project. The community signs up to a co-operative whereby they commit to build the sand dam themselves, maintain and sign up to learn how to ‘cross crop’, change their land planes to a terraced surface, and become elevated in other disciplines – all to avoid famine and become self sufficient.

We will be doing lots of different fundraising events over the coming months, which of course, we will keep updated on here for you to see what fun and games we have all been upto.
